BAILEY BOWL
EAST COAST SQUIB CHAMPIONSHIP
20th & 21st May 06
Four boats headed South to Royal St George Yacht Club from RNIYC – 139 Inshallah (David Eccles & Mark Hunter), 795 Born Wild (Norman Crawford & Thomas Anderson), 818 Toy for the Boys (Peter Wallace & Evine 818) and 820 Full Marks (Mark & Julie Brien).
Due to the Heineken Cup Final being played on Saturday we were all on the water early to ensure we would complete 3 races as the forecast for Sunday was bad. Unfortunately due to the windy conditions and a sloppy old sea, the 3 entrants from Howth were unable to sail across. This left a fleet of 12 and we sailed windward leewards.
Race 1
Toy for the Boys led from the start closely followed by Aquabats (Brendan Fogarty 787), Born Wild & Inshallah. At the end of the first run with very little in it, 818 maintained his lead followed by 139, 795 & 787 and as the course had been shortened it was all to play for. Toy for the Boys left a gap at the leeward mark allowing Inshallah to stick their nose in front and keep the lead to the finish.

Race 2
At the weather mark, Born Wild led from Aquabats and Inshallah with Toy for the Boys slightly back haven gone the wrong way up the first beat. Inshallah passed Aquabats going down the run. These positions were maintained and although the racing was very close, nobody could catch Born Wild.

Race 3
The 3rd race got underway with the first recall of the weekend although no boats went back! At the weather mark Toy for the Boys led from Aquabats & Inshallah. Born Wild was out of the picture at this stage due to a poor start and having to do penalty turns. Positions remained until the next beat where Inshallah passed both Aquabats & Toy. At the finish there was no gun for 818 due to them being OCS. Born Wild managed to battle through the fleet to a very commendable 3rd.

This saw us ashore to watch Munster lift the Heineken Cup but unfortunately this was to be the final race as sailing was abandoned on the Sunday due to the gale force wind.
We were extremely well looked after on our travels and we renewed some acquaintances as well as making others. The dinner at Royal Irish was very enjoyable and maybe it was a good thing racing was abandoned on Sunday! Our hospitality was epitomised on Sunday morning when in the driving rain and howling wind, we were assisted by 4 of the George fleet in lifting our boats out and helping us pack up – thanks guys, much appreciated.
