RS200s Update
Three RS200s from RNIYC headed over to Bangor for the Ballyholme Spring Open over the 30 April - 1 May. They were crewed by Chris Clayton/John Todd (Sat), Robin Flanagan/Michael Browne (Sun), John Driscoll/Sian McCleave and Michael Ennis/Michael Wright.
The boats competed in the Handicap fleet along with 29ERS, 49ERS, Laser2000 and standard Rig Lasers.
The racing between the three was extremely tight and is hopefully an indication of things to come.
John Driscoll and Sian McCleave managed four firsts amongst the RS200s in the four race series but could only manage a third overall in the handicap fleet.
Dave Cheyne, who presently owns all three RS200s is spearheading the interest in the fleet and is keen to get any interested people out sailing. Please contact him if you would like a sail!
RNIYC SB3 wins Warsash Spring Championship
Dave Cheyne and Peter Kennedy's SB3 MR SKIDDY, scored an impressive first place in the Warsash Spring Series in the Solent. Thirty eight boats took part in the two weekend event. The Holywood based crew have been regularly competing over on the South Coast of England where there is a large fleet of SB3s.
Cheyne Best of Dinghy Travellers
The weekend of 15/16 October saw four Royal North dinghy crews competing elswhere in the last major championships of the season. Dave Cheyne took his Laser SB3 to a superb victory in the Mid Winter Championships on the Hamble. In a fleet of 40 boats Dave came home 5 points clear of the opposition with 2 wins in the championship. A great result and congratulations to Team Harken on a very successful season. Greystones sailing club hosted the Irish RS 200/400 Nationals over 3 days. John Todd and Michael Browne took 5th in a fleet of 15 boats narrowly missing out on first Irish boat on a countback. A satisfying result for a crew who don't normally sail together. It would be nice next season to see the majority of the Royal North fleet attending this event as they could really do some damage. In the RS400 championship Greg Bell bravely took his 400 having been out only once since receiving it the week before..Crewed by Ruan O'Tiarnaigh they were well placed to be first Irish boat with a race to go in the fleet of 23. Unfortunately a black flag scuppered their chances and they were classified 16th overall in the final standings. An encouraging performance for the new set up despite the hiccup. Monkstown Bay sailing club in Cork hosted the 505 Irish Nationals where Ex Irish Laser 2 champion Michael Ennis and Fenton Parsons took 6th overall in a fleet of 12 on their first championship outing. Boat and handling problems affected their first 3 races in 15-20 knots of breeze on the Saturday although they managed a good 3rd place in race 2 having rounded the windward mark first...a very satisying performance. Sunday's forecasted 30 knots did not appear much to their disgust and although showing good light air boat speed at times they could only manage two 6th places. The hospitality of the Monkstown club was terrific and the sailing area is certainly challenging with a very strong tidal flow up the shipping channel! All in all some very good results and encouraging performances by everyone over the weekend . The Quayleisure.com Autumn series continues every Sunday up to Christmas so don't be packing your kit away just yet lads...
