Royal North’s Magnificent 7

Giant-killers in Dun Laoghaire

While Royal North’s more mature sailors basked in the sunshine of the Northern Squib Championships, seven of our youngest sailors travelled to the Royal St George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire for the Leinster Optimist Championships.  To put the report quite simply, Royal North put up an excellent performance and the “Oppie circuit” is certainly getting to know about us.

Ulster Optimist Championships 2007

OPTISPRING REGATTA 8th and 9th April.

Ross Vaughan (13) has just returned from competiting in an Optimist at the Optispring Regatta in Stellendam Holland.  This regatta is a selection trial event for the Belgium Optimist Association and 165 top Optimists sailors from across Europe took part in this Regatta, Ross was one of four Irish sailors competing.

The team left Dun Laoghaire on Thursday morning to catch the Hull Rotterdam Ferry departing Thursday night, arriving Friday morning in Holland.

Stellendam marina and Regatta centre is located on an huge enclosed sailing area within the sea defences surrounding the Dutch coastline.

The team practiced in the race area on Friday to tune into the wind and current conditions. ( the current is caused by flood gates being opened to allow excess water in the inland water system to be run off)

The Optimist fleet completed 6 large races, 2 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday in strong winds of 17 to 27 kts . Ross finished 24th and 1st Irish boat, a creditable achievement in such a large and competitive fleet.

Ross and Jess Brien will be competiting in the Irish team selection trials being held in Lough Derg and Skerries over the last two weekends of April, we wish them every success.
